About this Case

About this Case

The information about Mr. Ruzbeh Goli Abkenari is taken from the book Our Martyrs for Freedom and Socialism by Rah-e Kargar Publications. He was born in Abkenar near Bandar Anzali, Gilan province. He had elementary school education and two children. In order to support his family, he was forced to drop out of school and work. In 1969, he was arrested and condemned to one-year imprisonment for having connections with a revolutionary group oppose to the previous regime. After being released from the prison, he joined a group advocating armed struggle. He was arrested again for this activity and was condemned to ten years imprisonment. But, with the start of the revolution in 1978, he was released. He was a sympathizer of the Revolutionary Workers Organization of Iran, Rah-e Kargar. His sister (Parvin Goli Abkenari) and his brother-in-law, who were both sympathizers of this organization, were also executed.

"Rah-e Kargar" or the "Revolutionary Workers Organization of Iran" was established in the summer of 1979. The Organization was founded by individuals from various leftist groups who rejected the idea of armed struggle and believed in political action. They identified themselves as Marxist-Leninists, promoting a socialist revolution and the leadership of the proletariat. They differed with the pro-Soviet communist party, Tudeh, in that they opposed the Islamic Republic and Ayatollah Khomeini's leadership.
