Additional information on this case has been obtained from information sent to Boroumand Center (June 8, 2015) and Research and Interviews conducted by Boroumand Center with two informed sources (May 25, 2016; and February 23, 2021).

According to research and interviews conducted by Boroumand Center, Mr. Sa’id Zanganeh, also known as Sa’id Jelobandi, son of Mohammad Vali, was born on October 25, 1979.  He was from Fardis, Karaj, and he lived there.  He was married, and he had a nine-year-old son. He worked at an automobile repair shop.  He was a good person, and he tried not to harm anybody. Mr. sa’id Zanganeh’s case had to do with illegal drugs charges (Research and Interviews conducted by Boroumand Center with two informed sources, May 25, 2016 and February 23, 2021).

Arrest and detention

Mr. Sa’id Zanganeh was arrested on November 30, 2012, at his home in Fardis, Karaj, along with his wife’s brother, Ali Pirouz (Boroumand Center conversation with an informed person, May 25, 2016).

According to research and interview with an informed person conducted by Boroumand Center, Mr. Sa’id Zanganeh was being held at Karaj Penitentiary Prison. Mr. Zanganeh was well-liked among the prisoners.  He participated in cultural activities so that he could qualify for pardon. Trial

Branch 4 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Karaj, Judge Reza Farajollahi presiding, investigated the case of Mr. Sa’id Zanganeh and two other people on the same file, Messrs. Mas’ud Kurmajani and Ali Pirouz.

No information is available on the trial session or sessions (Boroumand Center conversation with an informed person, May 25, 2016).

Charges

The charges against Mr. Sa’id Zanganeh was announced as “transportation of illegal drugs” (Published news; and Boroumand Center conversation with an informed person, February 29, 2016; and May 25, 2016).

Under conditions where minimal safeguards are not provided in legal proceedings and the accused are deprived of a fair trial, the veracity of charges brought against them are neither absolute nor certain. International human rights organizations refer to reports showing that in some cases, officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran have brought false charges such as smuggling illegal drugs, or committing public or sexual offences, against people who oppose them (such as political, civic, or trade union activists, ethnic and religious minorities) and have subsequently executed them along with regular offenders sentenced to death. Working within a legal system that is out of step with international standards, thousands of people accused of illegal drug trafficking have been sentenced to execution.  Many of them have been hung according to the Law of 1989). This law stipulates that drug smugglers who had a certain amount of illegal drugs on them (5 kilograms hashish or opium, more than 30 grams heroin, codeine, or methadone) will be automatically sentenced to death. It is not clear how many people have been executed because of false accusatioins.

Evidence of guilt

The report of this execution does not contain information regarding the evidence provided against Mr. Sa’id Zanganeh.

Defense

According to Boroumand Center conversation with an informed person, one of the accused in this case had clearly stated during the court proceedings that all the illegal drugs found had belonged to him. Even so, according to this source, pursuant to the laws of the Islamic Republic, all three accused persons were found guilty and were sentenced to death by hanging (Boroumand Center conversation with informed persons, February 29, 2016; and February 23, 2021).

Judgment

Branch 4 of the Karaj Islamic Republic Court sentenced Mr. Sa’id Zanganeh to death by hanging. There is no further information on the details of this verdict.

At dawn on June 8, 2015, at the Central Penitentiary of Karaj, Mr. Sa’id Zanganeh was hanged with 11 other prisoners, while he was in bad shape, nearly dead.

Before the sentence was carried out, on June 6, 2015, the special squad for transporting prisoners entered the cell block. According to the informed source, Sa’id Zanganeh realized what was going on and attempted to self-harm in the hallway of the cell block.  Using a razor, he slashed his neck and his wrists and injured other parts of his body as well. He did this as a protest against the execution of his sentence and as a declaration of his innocence. When this happened, the prison guards were not able to immediately intervene because of the presence of other prisoners and due to the extraordinary circumstances. After Sa’id Zanganeh passed out, they wrapped him in a blanket and took him to a solitary cell. Mr. Sa’id Zanganeh was not allowed to see his family for the last time before being executed owing to the injuries he had inflicted on himself (Boroumand Center conversation with an informed person, February 23, 2021).

After the execution, since Mr. Zanganeh’s body was in bad shape because of the self-harming injuries, they wrapped his body in a shroud, and his family were not allowed to see the body at the time of the funeral. Mr. Sa’id Zanganeh was buried at Imamzadeh Ibrahim Cemetery in Malard, Alborz Province, along with his wife’s brother, Mr. Ali Pirouz (Boroumand Center conversation with an informed person, February 23, 2021).
