Resolution adopted by the General Assembly on 18 December 2025 on the Situation of human rights in Iran
The United Nations General Assembly adopted its 72nd resolution on the situation of human rights in Iran on December 18, 2025 that condemns the grave and systematic human rights violations, with 78 member-states voting in favor, 27 against, and 64 abstentions. For the first time, the document explicitly condemned the 1988 massacre of political prisoners in Iran and directly criticized Iran's transnational repression to intimidate Iranian dissidents living abroad. The resolution also expressed alarm over the surge in executions, condemned arbitrary detention, torture, and suppression of peaceful protesters, and condemned the systemic discrimination of violence against women and girls and called for an end to the persecution of religious minorities.
