About this Case

The execution of Mr. Mehran, along with four other people, was reported by ISCA News (Iranian Student Correspondents Association) on October 21, 2009.  Additional information has been compiled from Khorasan Newspaper (February 22, 2009).

According to available information, this case was related to a murder. The owner of a Pride car was killed while trying to prevent his car being stolen.  Mr. Mehran had a record of several car thefts (Khorasan Newspaper, Feb 22, 2009).

Arrest and detention

Mr. Mehran was arrested after the driver of a car he was trying to steal intervened and was killed. The circumstances of his arrest and detention are not known.

Trial

Section 71 of the Criminal Court of Tehran put Mr. Mehran on public trial.  The proceedings were attended by a member of the District Attorney’s Office, four judges, and one witness (Khorasan Newspaper).  No further information is available on his trial.

Charges

The charge brought against Mr. Mehran was “murder in the first degree”.  According to available information, he was charged with killing a man during an attempted car theft.  The victim had tried to prevent his Pride being stolen.

Evidence of guilt

According to available information, Mr. Mehran was convicted based on his confession.  During the court proceedings, he gave this testimony: “I stole the Pride, and I was getting away.  The owner stopped a motorcyclist, took his vehicle, and followed me.  He stuck his head into my window, I opened the door, he fell to the ground, and collided with parked cars.”   The scene was reenacted, and  witness corroboration was added to the report.  (Khorasan Newspaper)  

Defense

According to available information, Mr. “Gholam Reza” tried to intervene when his car was stolen, opened the car door, was flung to the ground and killed when he hit the cars parked on the street. 

According to available records, Mr. Mehran testified that he had intended to steal the car, and the death of Mr. Gholam Reza had been an accident. (ISCA News)  No further information is available on his defense.

Judgment

Branch 71 of the Criminal Court of Tehran sentenced Mr. Mehran to “death by hanging”.  Branch 37 of the Supreme Court approved this verdict.  

Mr. Mehran was executed in Evin Prison, Tehran, on the morning of October 21, 2009.  There is no information on the verdict leading to this execution.
