Kayhan Daily and Enqelab Eslami Daily published the news about Mr. Amanollah Rigi’s execution on 11 September 1979. According to Enqelab Eslami, Mr. Rigi was a citizen of Afghanistan but he himself mentioned that he was from Lutak, an area in Zahedan in Sistan and Baluchestan Province in the South East of Iran..

Trial

Mr. Rigi was tried the morning of 11 September 1379 in the Revolutionary Tribunal of Ahvaz in Khuzestan Province in the South West of Iran (Enqelab Eslami, 11 September 1979).

Charges

According to the report by Kayhan, Mr. Rigi’s charges were “deception of children” and “crimes against chastity” (Kayhan, 11 September 1979). Enqelab Eslami Daily explained that allegedly “he raped a 13-year-old boy along with torture”. The validity of the criminal charges brought against this defendant cannot be ascertained in the absence of the basic guarantees of a fair trial.

Evidence of guilt

The report of this execution does not contain information regarding the evidence provided against the defendant. Enqelab Eslami Daily reported that he confessed during the interrogations and the trial. Beside this, the reports refer to some evidence, but it is not clear what they were and if there was any testimony against him.

Defense

There is no information about Mr. Rigi’s defense. It is not clear if he had any opportunity to effectively defend himself such as summoning witnesses on his behalf or having access to a lawyer; it is especially not clear if, at the time of the confession and the interrogations, he could enjoy the legal assistance of an attorney, etc. According to the Kayhan Daily’s and Enqelab Eslami’s reports, Mr. Rigi’s trial was very short and without a possibility to appeal. According to Enqelab Eslami Daily, the trial took place at 12 a.m., and the verdict was carried out 2 hours later. (Enqelab Eslami, 11 September 1979).

Judgment

The Revolutionary Tribunal of Khuzestan Provice, the Central Branch in Ahvaz, declared that Mr. Rigi is a corrupter on earth for the “abduction of a child and raping him.” He was sentenced to death. The verdict was carried out right away at 2 a.m., and Mr. Rigi was executed by fire squad (Kayhan and Enqelab Eslami, 11 September 1979).
