About this Case

Trial

There is no information regarding this trial.

Charges

According to the newspaper report, Mr. Azarkhshi was charged with: “being continuously active in supplying and distributing drugs, supplying and distributing 28 bags of opium and 8 kg of heroin, participation in transporting 7 kg of heroin, selling 1 kg of heroin, as well as being an armed member of a strong drug-smuggling gang.”

The validity of the criminal charges brought against this defendant cannot be ascertained in the absence of the basic guarantees of a fair trial. International human rights organizations have drawn attention to reports indicating that the Islamic Republic’s authorities have brought trumped-up charges against their political opponents and executed them for drug trafficking, sexual, and other criminal offences. Thousands of alleged drug traffickers have been sentenced to death following judicial processes that fail to meet international standards. The exact number of people convicted based on trumped-up charges is unknown

No information is available concerning the evidence presented against the accused.

Defense

No information is available concerning Mr. Azarkhshi’s defense.

Judgment

The Islamic Revolutionary Tribunal of Mashad declared Mr. Ali Akbar Azarkhshi a “corruptor on earth” and condemned him to death. The Supreme Judicial Council approved the sentence. He was executed in public at the railway station in Mashad at dawn on October 26, 1987.
