Reporters Without Borders

Reporters Without Borders:

defends journalists and media assistants imprisoned or persecuted for doing their job and exposes the mistreatment and torture of them in many countries.

fights against censorship and laws that undermine press freedom.

gives financial aid each year to 100 or so journalists or media outlets in difficulty (to pay for lawyers, medical care and equipment) as well to the families of imprisoned journalists.

works to improve the safety of journalists, especially those reporting in war zones.

Reporters Without Borders is registered in France as a non-profit organisation and has consultant status at the United Nations.

The announced launching of Iran’s “National Internet” has been widely covered in the media. Meanwhile the authorities have fortified filtering and their technical capacity to closely monitor the Web. Individuals and groups alike have been arrested in order to identify and neutralize dissident networks and intimate bloggers and journalists. For the first time, four netizens have been given the death penalty, and three of them may be executed at any time. Iran’s already harsh repression has become even more brutal.

Reporters Without Borders condemns the arrest of Bahman Totonchi, a former contributor to the weekly Karfto, on 18 November in Sanandaj, the capital of the northwestern province of Kurdistan.
