Appeal/Urgent Action
“We welcome the bold statement by UN experts calling for the urgent release of Narges Mohammadi, a human rights advocate reportedly now ill with coronavirus symptoms. Iranian prisons lack proper hygienic supplies and are overcrowded, yet innocent civilians are needlessly charged and incarcerated for made up offenses not recognized by international law. Ms. Mohammadi poses no threat to society, yet she remains behind bars alongside human rights lawyers, peaceful protestors, labor and student activists, religious minorities, and others. This cruelty must end and the international community is rightly outraged by Iran’s behavior. We echo the strong statement of these UN human rights experts and call on Iran to set these innocent people free.”

In April 2020, the  Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights in Iran (ABC) issued a report titled: “COVID-19 Fear in Iran’s Prisons: Iran Must Do More To Protect Prisoners.” An updated report will be released in August.
